Withington has a young, mixed community. There are students from the nearby universities, families on the residential streets, and people working shifts and office hours across South Manchester. If you live here and want your licence, you probably want lessons that fit around a busy week rather than a fixed pattern. That is how we plan lessons at Driving Lessons MCR.

We teach manual and automatic lessons in Withington and neighbouring areas, with pick-up and drop-off within our service area. Learners have rated us 5.0★ across 278 Google reviews, and our team has more than 10 years of experience teaching in Manchester.

Fitting lessons around study and shifts

We are open 8am to 7pm, seven days a week. Students often prefer lessons on a particular day or in a block during the holidays; shift workers want something different again. Tell us your availability when you contact us. We will pass it to your instructor and propose a first lesson. If you have a fixed timetable, say so: it is easier to plan a regular weekly slot than to keep rearranging.

Student-friendly planning. Lots of students pick the Regular Course (2–4 hours a week) during term time, then use holiday weeks for a short burst. Others choose the Crash Course for the summer to fit lessons close together. Both can work. Neither is better than the other; the right one is the one you can actually keep up.

What learning in Withington involves

Busy shared roads. The main routes through this part of South Manchester carry lots of buses and cyclists. You learn how to position safely, how far to leave when overtaking a cyclist and how to be patient behind a bus.

Residential streets. Quieter roads either side of the main routes give you a calm place to start.

Pedestrians everywhere. Busy crossings and people stepping out are part of everyday driving here. Your instructor helps you build the habit of scanning ahead early.

Junctions of all sizes. From small mini-roundabouts to bigger multi-lane junctions, you progress at your pace.

Your first five lessons

  1. A relaxed chat, then cockpit drill, controls and moving off.
  2. Steering, stopping, gears (or automatic controls) and mirrors.
  3. Simple junctions on quiet roads.
  4. Hill starts, turning left and right, basic observations.
  5. Busier junctions and bus-and-cyclist awareness.

Everyone moves differently. If you need longer on step two, you take longer on step two.

Withington questions

Do you teach beginners? Yes. A lot of learners start with zero experience.

Can I learn in my own car? In most cases lessons are in your instructor’s car. If you want to use your own car, tell us first so your instructor can check that it is suitable.

What languages do you teach in? Some instructors may be able to teach in languages other than English. Tell us your preference when you contact us and we will see who is available.

How can I check an instructor? You can look up an instructor on the DVSA register at GOV.UK (instructors choose whether to be listed).
