If you feel your stomach tighten at the thought of driving, you are not unusual. A lot of the people who contact us are nervous: some have never sat behind the wheel, some failed a test and lost confidence, and some passed years ago and have not driven since. Wherever you are starting from, you will not be rushed and you will not be judged.

What “nervous” can look like
Nervousness has many forms, and naming yours helps your instructor. Common ones are:
- worry about stalling or making mistakes in front of someone;
- fear of busy junctions, roundabouts or fast roads;
- anxiety after a bad experience or a test fail;
- general nerves about being in charge of a car;
- feeling pressure from family to learn quickly.
You do not have to explain yourself in detail. A line such as “roundabouts scare me” is enough.
How we work with nervous learners
We talk first. Before the first lesson we ask what worries you. The first part of lesson one is a conversation, not a drive.
We start somewhere quiet. The car stays on calm roads until you feel steady. Busy roads come later, in small steps, when you are ready.
You set the pace. If you need to repeat something, we repeat it. If you want to stop and breathe, we stop.
Clear explanations. Your instructor tells you what is coming before it happens: “In a moment we will turn left; check your mirror now.” No surprises.
Honest feedback. We say what went well first, then what to work on.
We do not pressure you to book a test. You decide when you are ready, with our honest view. Only you can book it anyway (GOV.UK).
Manual or automatic if you are nervous?
Some nervous learners find an automatic easier because there is no clutch to stall. Others prefer a manual because they want a licence that covers every car. Both are fine. Read the automatic lessons page and our guide to manual vs automatic. If you cannot decide, begin with the first 5 hours and see how it feels.
Which course?
The Regular Course (2–4 hours a week) gives you time between lessons. The 5-hour package is £210 manual or £220 automatic, a small commitment to try us out. Or 10 hours: £350 manual, £370 automatic. Prices as at 27 Oct 2026; see all prices.
Many nervous learners prefer the Regular Course to the Crash Course because the pace is gentler, but if you would rather have lessons close together, the Crash Course is open to everyone.
Test nerves
Even confident learners feel nervous before a driving test. We will explain what happens on the day: an eyesight check, two vehicle safety questions, around 35 minutes of driving including 20 to 35 minutes of independent driving, and a reversing exercise (GOV.UK). The examiner will not stop the test for a minor mistake; you can carry on. Our nervous driver tips have more.
A note on health
Everyday nerves are normal. If your anxiety feels severe, or affects daily life beyond driving, please talk to your GP. We are driving instructors, not health professionals, and we do not claim to treat anxiety.
