How to Book Your Driving Test in 2026 (After the May Rule Change)

The rules for booking a car driving test in Great Britain changed in stages during 2026. If you are learning to drive now, they affect you directly. This guide summarises what is different, what to do step by step, and how to avoid the common mistakes. Everything factual below comes from GOV.UK’s guidance, Changes to driving test booking rules in 2026, last updated on 19 June 2026 at the time of writing.

What changed and when

The rules apply to car driving tests in England, Scotland and Wales.

Can my instructor book my test for me?

No. It is against the law for your driving instructor or anyone else to book a test for you. That includes changing, swapping or cancelling a test for someone else. At Driving Lessons MCR we will tell you when we think you are ready, give you your instructor’s reference number and, if you want, sit with you while you book it yourself.

You can still be helped by someone you know, as long as they are with you while you do it and you complete as many steps as you can yourself, using an email address and phone number you control.

Step by step: booking your test

  1. Have a provisional licence and pass your theory test first. The theory test costs £23. The pass marks are 43 out of 50 for the multiple-choice part and 44 out of 75 for hazard perception. Your pass certificate number lasts for 2 years, and you must pass your driving test within that time (GOV.UK). See theory test tips.
  2. Agree with your instructor that you are ready. GOV.UK says to speak to your instructor before you book.
  3. Ask for your instructor’s reference number. You can enter it when you book to make sure your instructor is available. Instructors can set their availability, so the system checks it for you.
  4. Choose your test centre and date carefully. You can only move your test to one of the 3 nearest centres to where it is booked, or back to the first centre. Pick a date you can realistically be ready by.
  5. Book on GOV.UK. You confirm that you are the learner taking the test and agree to the terms. The fee is £62 on weekdays, or £75 in the evenings, at weekends and on bank holidays (GOV.UK). Use only the official service; unofficial sites usually charge more.

The 2-change limit

You can only make two changes to an existing booking. A change is:

  • changing the date or time;
  • changing the test centre; or
  • swapping appointments with another learner.

Changing the date and centre together counts as one change. These things do not count: updating contact details, adding or removing your instructor’s reference number, and changes DVSA makes (for example because of bad weather; if DVSA changes your test you are reset to 2 changes). If you need more than two changes, you have to cancel and book again. You get a full refund if you cancel at least 10 full working days before the test date.

Cancellation finder apps and websites

GOV.UK says you are not allowed to use unofficial services that scan the booking service for appointments. This includes cancellation finder websites or apps. If you break the terms, DVSA can suspend your online access (so you can only book by phone) or cancel your booking.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Booking too early. If you are not ready, you could waste a test fee and a slot. GOV.UK says to take your test only when you can do everything in the national standard for driving cars without instruction.
  • Using your changes carelessly. Only use them when your circumstances genuinely change.
  • Forgetting the theory certificate’s 2-year limit.
  • Choosing a centre you do not intend to use. Because moves are limited to nearby centres, book where you are happy to take the test.

What happens after you book?

You go on practising with your instructor. Use the weeks before the test to cover everything in the national standard, take mock tests and get comfortable with the independent driving section. Check GOV.UK’s “What to take to your test” page before the day. If you are not sure what to expect on the test itself, our guide on how many lessons you need describes the format.

How we help at Driving Lessons MCR

We do not book tests for you and nobody can. What we do: give honest advice on readiness, supply the reference number, and sit with you through the GOV.UK booking if you want help. Learn more on our FAQ page or if you need to speed up, see the Crash Course. Note that test availability is controlled by DVSA, so we cannot promise a date.
