“How many lessons will I need?” is the question we hear most. It is a fair one, because it decides your budget and your timeline. There is no single answer, but there is a useful average, a clear rule about the minimum, and a lot of factors you can influence.
The average: 45 hours plus 22
DVSA says research shows that, on average, it takes people 45 hours of driving lessons with a driving instructor plus 22 hours of private practice to pass their test. DVSA adds that there is no minimum number of lessons or hours you must do (DVSA).
That is an average across many learners. Some pass with fewer hours and many need more.
The rule: there is no minimum
GOV.UK states that there is no minimum number of lessons you must have or hours you must practise, and that how many you need depends on how quickly you learn (GOV.UK: taking driving lessons). GOV.UK also says to take your test only when you can do everything in the national standard for driving cars without instruction (GOV.UK: booking your test). Your instructor is best placed to judge when you are ready.
What changes your number?
Your starting point. Someone who has never touched a steering wheel will usually need more hours than someone who has practised in a quiet car park or has driven abroad.
How often you have lessons. Lessons spread far apart mean more time spent recapping. Our Regular Course is 2–4 hours a week; the Crash Course packs hours closer together.
Private practice. DVSA’s guidance says combining professional lessons with private practice can help you build experience more quickly. Your supervisor must be 21 or over, have held a full licence for at least 3 years and be qualified to drive the type of vehicle; you also need the right insurance and L plates (DVSA Ready to Pass?).
Confidence and nerves. Anxious learners often need extra time on the basics. That is fine. See our nervous driver tips.
Where you learn. City driving with trams, buses and cyclists takes practice. Quiet suburbs ease you in, but you still need to meet busy roads before your test.
Manual or automatic. Many learners find an automatic simpler to control. The test is the same for both (GOV.UK). Read manual vs automatic.
Age, health and learning style. No two people learn the same way. Tell your instructor how you learn best.
What does 45 hours look like in weeks?
If you take lessons for 2 hours once a week, 45 hours takes about 23 weeks. At 4 hours a week it takes about 11 to 12 weeks. At 8 hours a week it takes under 6 weeks. These are arithmetic examples, not promises; you might need fewer or more.
How to tell you are ready
A good instructor will tell you honestly. Use a simple checklist:
- You can drive routes you have not practised before without help from your instructor.
- You handle junctions, roundabouts and lane changes calmly and safely.
- You can carry out the reversing exercise and parking without prompting.
- You have driven independently, following signs or a sat nav.
- You have completed mock tests with a result you would be comfortable with.
- You could drive on your own safely tomorrow.
The test itself lasts around 35 minutes, including 20 to 35 minutes of independent driving, a “show me, tell me” question each, an eyesight check and one reversing exercise (GOV.UK).
Why not just book a test and see?
A test costs £62 on weekdays or £75 evenings and weekends, and you pay again if you re-sit (GOV.UK). Since 31 March 2026 you can change an appointment only twice, and since 12 May 2026 only you can book it (GOV.UK rules). Booking before you are ready can waste both time and money. See how to book your driving test in 2026.
What does it cost?
With our prices, a 30-hour Regular manual package is £1,050 and a 15-hour package £525, so 45 hours is £1,575 in a manual car. Automatic is £1,665 and Crash is £1,980. Details on our prices page.
A practical plan
- Start with 5 or 10 hours and see how you feel.
- Start studying the Highway Code and theory test material early. See theory test tips.
- Add private practice when your instructor says you are ready.
- Take mock tests in the final stage.
- Book your test yourself when your instructor agrees you are ready.
