Salford sits right next to Manchester city centre but has its own character: a mix of dense terraced streets, newer developments, the waterside at Salford Quays, a busy university and plenty of main roads leading in and out of the city. If you want to learn to drive here, you want an instructor who knows how those streets feel when you are behind the wheel for the first time.

Driving Lessons MCR teaches manual and automatic lessons across Salford, Broughton, Higher Broughton and Lower Broughton. Pick-up and drop-off is included within our service area. We have taught Manchester learners for over 10 years and hold a 5.0★ rating from 278 Google reviews.

Learning to drive in Salford: what to expect

Narrow streets and parked cars. Many residential streets in the Broughton area are lined with parked cars. That makes them excellent for learning to judge width, meet oncoming traffic and pull over safely. We teach this early so it stops feeling stressful.

Buses, bus lanes and trams. Salford has plenty of bus routes and Metrolink lines. Your instructor will help you recognise bus lane signs and times, give buses room to pull out and treat tram crossings with care.

Busy main roads. Roads that carry commuters towards Manchester get congested at peak times. We introduce them once you are ready, and we can schedule lessons at quieter hours first.

Students. If you are studying in Salford, tell us which days you are free. We are open 8am–7pm every day and will do our best to match you to a lesson time that fits your timetable.

Salford FAQs

Do you cover Broughton, Higher Broughton and Lower Broughton? Yes, they are on our service area list, along with Salford itself. If your street is nearby but not named, send your postcode.

Can I learn automatic in Salford? Yes, we teach both. If you pass your test in an automatic you will only be able to drive automatic cars (GOV.UK).

How do I book my theory and driving test? You book both yourself on GOV.UK. A driving instructor cannot book your test for you any more, and it is against the law for anyone but the learner to book, change or cancel it (GOV.UK rules). We can sit with you while you do it and give you your instructor’s reference number.

How long should I expect it to take? It varies a lot. DVSA reports an average of about 45 hours of lessons and 22 hours of private practice (DVSA). See our guide on how many driving lessons you need.
