Stockport has a distinctive geography: a town centre built on a steep valley, the M60 and busy A-roads at its edges, and a ring of leafy suburbs to the north and south. Learning to drive here means you get used to hills early. That is a good thing, because it makes hill starts, clutch control and planning ahead feel natural.

What makes Stockport a good place to learn

Hills. Hill starts are a staple of the driving test and many learners dread them. In Stockport you get lots of chances to practise: in a manual, finding the biting point and balancing the controls; in an automatic, using the handbrake and accelerator smoothly. We start on gentle slopes and move on as you improve.

A real mix of roads. Within a short distance you can find residential streets, busy town roads, dual carriageways and larger roundabouts. Your instructor introduces them in order.

Suburbs with different personalities. Cheadle and Cheadle Hulme have busy shopping streets and residential roads; Heald Green is close to the airport, so you can meet heavier traffic on certain days. We plan lessons so that you always know what to expect.

Typical routine

Most Stockport learners choose either:

  • 2 hours once a week, around work or study, which is a calm, steady pace; or
  • 2 sessions a week, which accelerates things without any rush; or
  • A Crash Course, with lessons close together, if you want to get ready for your test sooner.

Manual in Stockport?

Many people choose a manual licence here because of the hills and because it gives access to any car. If that is you, read about manual driving lessons in Manchester. If you would like to keep things simple, an automatic is a perfectly good choice.

What about the test?

Passing the theory test comes first, then you book your practical test yourself on GOV.UK. Test dates and waiting times vary, and we cannot promise a date (GOV.UK booking rules). We will help you work out when you are ready and show you where to find the reference number you need.

Stockport FAQs

Which areas do you cover near Stockport? Stockport, Cheadle, Cheadle Hulme and Heald Green. For anywhere nearby, send your postcode and we will check.

How many hours should I plan for? Averages are a poor guide for individuals. DVSA’s figure is about 45 hours of lessons and 22 hours of private practice (DVSA). Our guide to how many lessons you need explains why yours may differ.

Can I start from scratch? Yes. You do not need any experience.

Can my family help me practise? Once your instructor thinks you are ready, private practice with a family member or friend can help. They must be 21 or over, have held a full licence for at least 3 years and be qualified for the car, and you both need the right insurance (GOV.UK / DVSA).
