A manual licence is the most flexible licence you can get: pass your test in a manual car and you can drive both manual and automatic cars. Driving Lessons MCR has taught manual lessons across Manchester for more than 10 years, and our Google rating is 5.0★ from 278 reviews.

Why choose manual
- Your licence covers both. If you pass in a manual car, you can drive manual and automatic cars. If you pass in an automatic, you can only drive automatics (GOV.UK).
- More choice later. Manual cars are common, and a manual licence means you can drive any of them.
- Skills that stay with you. Once you can control a clutch, you can drive almost anything.
If you are unsure, read our manual vs automatic guide or look at automatic lessons.
What your manual lessons cover
- Controls and moving off: clutch control, biting point, gears and handbrake, at your pace.
- Junctions and roundabouts: observation and judging gaps in Manchester traffic.
- Hill starts and slow control.
- Manoeuvres: parking and turning in the road.
- Independent driving and test preparation, including the questions you may be asked about the car (GOV.UK driving test).
Struggling with the clutch is normal. Your instructor breaks it down and repeats it until it feels natural. If nerves are an issue, see nervous driver lessons.

Frequently asked questions
How many manual lessons will I need? It varies a lot. DVSA’s often-quoted average is about 45 hours of lessons plus 22 hours of private practice, but it is an average, not a target (DVSA Books). See how many lessons you need to pass.
Is the manual test harder? The practical test is the same for manual and automatic cars (GOV.UK).
Can I switch to automatic later? Yes; tell us and we will explain the options.
Who books my test? You do. Since 12 May 2026 only the learner can book, change or cancel a car driving test (GOV.UK).
Where do you teach? Across Greater Manchester, including Manchester city centre, Salford, Trafford, Chorlton, Withington and Stockport.
